Hi all, I'm sure this has been discussed before, and I don't want to beat a dead horse- but I also don't want to make any mistakes! In the next few days I will probably be picking up a 2003 Stella with almost 5,000 miles on it.. I am pretty familiar with 2 stroke honda scooters, and 2 stroke suzuki motorcycles (60's) so I know about pre-mix and oil injection systems..

My questions are related to the auto-oilers on Stellas, I seem to hear that they are very robust and very time tested (good news) and then I hear horror stories about seizing engines randomly..I'm not sure which to believe!

In my experience (and I can def be wrong) a well tuned 2 stroke, esp stock, should be able to run at high RPM with no issues. I never gave a second thought to the oil injection on my honda scooters, and I have a tendency to be the guy who gives the pre-mix that little extra drop or two 'just in case' on my 66 Suzuki, which resulted in a lot of fouled plugs if you drove in any manner not befitting of a race track.

So if I try to straighten my thoughts out:
1. Is the system actually reliable? (seems to be the answer is yes)
2. Does it become un-reliable when you mod the engine? (seems to be when people usually have an issue?)
3. Is it easy/possible/are there instructions to safely convert to a premix setup? (unknown!)
4. I like the convenience of auto oilers, does anyone add a little 2 stroke oil or Marvel Mystery oil to the gas to potentially foul plugs, but still give the cylinder a little extra lube?
5. If the auto mix fails, does it fail in the 'no oil added' mode? IE: only time I've had a failure was on a Johnson 50 horse outboard and the diaphragm failed causing it to inject a LOT of oil, to the point where it wouldn't run because it was flooded on oil.

I'm not saying I'm gonna run around at WOT 24/7 but I don't want to be afraid to go faster than 30 on it either!

Also, is there anything to watch out for in 2003? I recall reading 2005 cranks were bad?

Thanks for the input! sorry if its repetitive.. and confusing!

Yes
No
Yes

Dunno, refer 1. The drive system is actually lubed by your gear oil. Running out of 2T is obviously high on the list of things to avoid doing.

Thanks for the reply, I think I'll stick with the oil injection system and make sure I never run out..

Anything to do right away when I buy this? Anything to look for?

Thanks,
Tim

You want it to idle, rev up with throttle and settle back to idle.

Check the hubs are on tight.

Check the disc brake rotor screws are secure.

Make sure the brakes work, tyres are ok, oil in the sightglass, yada yada.

Take it for a good blast. If it doesn't overheat and still does the idle, rev up, rev down when it's hot then it's a good start.

Wiring suffers in the headset so indicators and lighting get dodgy.

OK, thank you! I will be asking more questions when I pick it up today or tomorrow...
